WELCOME & INTRODUCTION
Welcome to our first official journal entry for 8 September, the Feast of the Nativity of Our Lady2.
The Rosary on the Camino project shares seasonal information about local Terço / Mass / prayer events along the Atlantic Coast of Portugal in the Archdiocese of Braga in Portugal with some notes on Lisbon / Fátima / Porto / A Guarda in Pontevedra, Spain.
Today is the Feast of the Nativity of Mary, the Mother of God. It is fitting that this day coincides each year with a tradition, which, “after an interregnum and sixty-one years resumed in 2014” is now an annual procession in Honour of Saint Joseph.
According to this year’s programme:3 this event
was an authentic and exciting manifestation of Faith in honor of the putative Father of us. Behold, the Bridegroom of Mary returns to the streets of our city, particularly this Parish of Ribamar, to bless its people and to continually applaud the streets and avenues through which his majestic andor passes.4
CELEBRATE ST. JOSEPH IN PORTUGAL: FORMATION ON THE CAMINO
The community also begins to prepare this feast in Barrio Norte as September begins.
This year, (Dia 1, Sept 1) began the Rosary Novena which continues annually from around 6:15 PM (18H15) with Daily Mass that follows.
This is a spiritual preparation for this Feast Day which culminates on Saturday when the novena begins at 16H45 before the Solemn Vigil mass.
All are welcome to unite in prayer each year.
“Tríduo de Preparação”5
Last night began the “Tríduo de Preparação”
— Sept 7 — and Novena cards were distributed before the mass with a special guest sermon by a well-known pastor from Portugal.
The Tríduo continues today: Sept 8 and tomorrow 9 Sept as with the same schedule as above at 6:15 PM (18H15) with Daily Mass that follows.
All Camino pilgrims are welcome.
10 Sept: (Dia 10) * NEW * TERÇO LED BY JMJ DELEGATES & YOUTH GROUP
A new initiative led by World Youth Day delegates who returned from Lisbon with a new sense of mission is a Terço (5 decades of the Rosary) starting at 10H50 this Sunday.

BRIEF HISTORY
Constructed on the site of the neo-Romanesque chapel consecrated in 1960 and that was built by the architect Moura Coutinho de Almeida d' Eça, the new church was designed by the architect Rufino, the senior official of the "Public Works" and renovated by the architect Moreira da Silva, from Porto, in the seventies.10
In the sixties, the church in its stylized “neo-Gothic style” had separate chapels. Very tall, painted white, with simple stained glass windows in blue and yellow tones (colors of “Bairro Norte”), São José was cold and it became difficult to implement the liturgical changes recommended by the Second Vatican Council.11 The interior space of the church was uncomfortable and the chapel area was isolated, not having the appropriate size for the ceremonies to take place in the most solemn way.
ABOUT MOREIRA DA SILVA’S INFLUENCE:
The architect Moreira da Silva tried to make the church more practical for worship. He lined the corrugated wood ceiling, improving the acoustics of the Church, and fans were added to the space allowing air circulation that prevented people from fainting during the season of "baths". The chapels became open-concept in the area of the old sacristies; then next to the chapel was adapted (as a pseudo-transept) to increase the size of the church. In the "side aisles", the saints, almost all life-size, were placed in small granite corbels, and the altarpieces that filled the primitive "chapels" were removed.13
