Tomé Reflects on Joyful Memories of Lisbon as we pray the Glorious Mysteries + Terço on the Camino and Adoration today before 11H00 mass and 19h00 masses for visitors to the Atlantic Coast of Portugal

Watch now | Fr. David Michael Moses comes to the Rosary Hour Podcast with Fr. Elias Mills as they both teach the solemn Rosary structure with Fátima prayers curated by Padre Nuno from Portugal.

Most recently, we celebrated the memory of St. John Bosco the patron of youth. Here is a great talk between two young people, Asher and Amelia from Jan. 4, 2024 which is featured on the Children’s Rosary website childrensrosary.org.

Amor Sabedoria Eterno | Gift & Mystery

In his book, Brian Kranick reviews “The Dreams of St. John Bosco” in this way:

St. John Bosco was an Italian priest who lived in the 19th century helping and educating youth, particularly disadvantaged young boys. Many of the vision-like dreams revolved around the state of the boys’ souls in his Oratory.

The dreams often involved the boys with weapons in fierce battles against gruesome animals and beasts. The weapons were metaphors for the sacraments and devotions, while the animals and beasts were various sins and vices.

Former Word on Fire author, Robert Mixa summarize’s one of the most famous dreams of St. John Bosco, “The Two Pillars” here:

a ship being tossed about by a sea storm. The ship rocked back and forth, almost cap-sizing. But this did not happen because two pillars guided the ship: one with the Blessed Virgin and the other with the Holy Eucharist.1

He continues:

St. John Bosco interpreted the ship in his dream as the Church sailing through the seas of time during which it is often kicked about by tumultuous storms, threatening to cap-size the Bark of Peter. Sometimes it seems like the violence and indifference of history will have the last word. But with St. John Bosco we can embrace the hope that the Church has a glorious future dependent upon the care of our Blessed Mother and the Holy Eucharist, i.e. Christ’s presence among us, continually constituting us as His Mystical Body.

Now… About the Eucharist, St. John Bosco said these things:

He also said:

At 19h00 tonight, 4 February Pe Nuno will expose the Blessed Sacrament and his parish at S. José across from the Albergue in Póvoa de Varzim. If you are looking to pray the Rosary before the Blessed Sacrament, he invites travellers on the Camino to join him in prayer. If you must walk directly from Vila do Conde to Esposende, or Esponsende to Viana do Castelo, you can stop to pray the Rosary in those spaces as well if you catch the evening masses. (See our previous posts for details).

Padre Nuno teaches below the prayer recited at the beginning of adoration here in the original Portuguese:

LIVING THE GOSPEL ON THE CAMINO

Reflecting on the Joy of good memories - Lisbon 2023 and the Rosary Ministry of Padre Nuno’s Youth Group which also welcomes Children’s Rosary to the Camino this summer, here is one of the voices of the parish community which helped organize the Procession on the Camino one year ago for World Youth Day. Meet Tomé!

On Feb. 2, 2023 the Symbols Procession on the Camino to Santiago marked the day the Archisprestado in Vila do Conde and the Archisprestado in Póvoa de Varzim welcomed the arrival of the cross and the image of Our Lady.

These two special cities are on the world map are known by pilgrims who have for centuries began the tradition of walking from the Sé in Porto, Portugal near the Atlantic coast in the Porto Region, and from other starting points more recently, like Lisbon, etc. There are many roads leading to Santiago, which became the new Holy Land of Europe according to National Geographic, due to the proximity of the pilgrim journey for those trekking the once named Iberian Peninsula inhabited by pre-Ancient Roman nomadic visitors who left flint and other tradable goods behind as clues to their presence before the Roman Empire took hold of this area of the world, and before San Tiago came to this very coast to preach the Good News in 40 A.D.

Some believe that the Blessed Mother appeared to San Tiago while she was still alive, encouraging him to persevere. It is not a surprise that this part of the world has so many processions honouring the Mother of God.

THE WHY OF THIS PROCESSION

Attended by a number of Archbishops and many priests in the local diocese, this symbols procession anticipating World Youth Day celebrated the pilgrim visit of delegates from around the world who were invited by the Archbishop of Portugal to pray with Pope Francis the Via Sacra, the Rosary, Holy Adoration, and the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass in many parts of Lisbon and the surrounding territory.

Priests / Bishops / laity / onlookers who wanted to join via live stream or as friends of World Youth Day and who were unable last July to trek to Lisbon, Portugal, the capital city which moved from Guimarães in the district of Braga (Northern Portugal proper).

Lisbon welcomed over 1.5 million pilgrims for World Youth Day in the scorching sun, yet the essence of it remains. In the neighbourhood near Rato station is a lovely mass in a Church dedicated to St. Isabel which Pope Francis focused upon as part of the message of World Youth Day 2023: “Mary went in haste”.

This message of the 2nd Joyful Mystery he spoke of many years earlier as a reflection the end of the Rosary which marked the final day in the month of May dedicated to Our Lady: The Mother of God.

Below are some reflections by Tomé who was interviewed by Children’s Rosary ® member, Amelia. This is Part 1 of the interview re-released for Terço on the Camino readers and those travelling today. Scroll down further for the Digital Toolkit for participating in the Youth Group’s monthly perpetual Rosary and the Children’s Rosary on the Camino, with prayers curated and edited by Pe Nuno.

Above is a small introduction to Tomé who is the 2024 Section Editor for Youth Ministry on the Camino to Santiago for the Rosary Hour Podcast team. He speaks about his visit to Lisbon, and these digital magazine pages created for the English version of odiario.substack.com via oterco.substack.com are featured here to introduce the Rosary led by his Youth Group which returned from World Youth Day with a renewed purpose to invite others to pray the solemn Rosary each month, a task they have taken on as a perpetual group effort at Fr. Nuno’s parish steps from the Way of the Sands and the famous pilgrim stop after Vila do Conde where he preaches and ministers to thousands along the Northern segments of the Iberian Peninsula.
The above photo is taken inside the Oceanarium near the coast in Lisbon and by Centro Vasco de Gama. The above group went to this Aquarium together during their trip to JMJ, and they are a group from Madrid Spain and hosted by Pe Nuno’s parish. In the above page, Children’s Rosary member asks Tomé, “What happens at World Youth Day?”
Food at World Youth Day was a challenge, Tomé adds, yet in the spirit of making a true pilgrimage, his group made the most of this experience, glad for the company and to share the joy of being together as they processed to Parque Tejo to unite in the prayers with the Pope and almost 1.5 million visitors to Portugal. Tomé reports that this group prayed the Rosary every day during their pilgrim journey. As well, they enjoyed very much the tuna and bagels!

MAKING THE ROSARY A SPACE FOR CONTINUING THE MEMORY OF JMJ

One significant contribution that this Youth Group began was a Youth Led Rosary on the Camino in conjunction with the efforts of Pe Nuno to implement a Rosary 52 weeks a year before the Children’s / Family mass.

Today, Tomé is leading with his delegates from World Youth Day, Young Professionals, and the parish community which gathers for the 11h30 mass on Sundays a solemn Rosary.

Tomé and his group pray Sunday, February 4th and again Sunday March 3rd, almost every First Sunday of the month with the Rosary curated by Padre Nuno Rocha.

If you are able to join in prayer, download this toolkit and lead a Rosary with your JMJ group online, in person, or before any mass. Even if you are not on the Camino, you can ask your local Parish to start a Rosary before the mass, once a month, and led by World Youth Day delegates.

You can arrange this with your pastor by using our downloadable version of this toolkit and having the prayers vetted and approved by the pastor by praying the Rosary together when he has time.

Even better, if you can have time for adoration as a Youth Group and offer a Rosary as a sacrifice prior to the beginning of advent on Feb. 14th, traditionally known as Valentine’s day, you would offer the Mother of God a great gift of love! It is easy. Pick a day, make a poster, and insert the invitation into the Church Bulletin. It is that easy.

Padre Nuno’s community now expects the Rosary before the mass on Sundays and many are able to join, even for one decade. Let’s make 2024 an opportunity to pray the Rosary every Sunday, and challenge ourselves to pray the Rosary every day.

For inspiration, you can use the Rosary toolkit designed by Nuno, Gustavo, and Tomé after they returned from World Youth Day and which is approved by their pastor, Pe. Nuno:

Why should we participate in World Youth Day? Porque deveriamos participar nas JMJ?

Original Article: Escrito por Tomé Alexandre,

Section Editor for Youth Ministry for Terço on the Camino Newsletter

Friday July 28th, before the Youth Mass in Caxinas with World Youth Day group visiting from a parish in Madrid, Spain. This group prayed a Rosary at Lapa with Padre Nuno’s parish. Children’s Rosary bookets were distributed to those who wanted to follow the text of the Rosary in Spanish in this bilingual Rosary. Above is the pastor and the group stands in front of the main steps to Nossa Senhora da Lapa, which celebrated its 250 year presence on the Camino to Santiago in 2023 with the Archbishop of Braga and organized by Pe Nuno, President of the Pastoral Planning and Economic committees at this parish. You can see his yearly August 15 procession here via the Rosary Hour Podcast.

This is the picture of the mass they attended:

DAY 1 in LISBON

Padre at the JMJ CAMP in LISBON
