ARCHDIOCESE OF BRAGA | Prayer options by the Albergues |
Where to pray near the Albergue de peregrinos São José de Ribamar, Póvoa de Varzim, Portugal
First Friday | Nov. 3, 2023 | Centres of Formation on the Camino to Santiago, Portugal
Dear Readers of the Rosary on the Camino:
Where-to-Pray on the Camino?
Sometimes it is hard to know where to pray, or to find a prayer community in a new country and when on pilgrimage.
You might be from Belgium, the Ukraine, China, England, India. Know that this site was created for you! You are most welcome as you journey on “The Way” of St. James to pray with the communities on the Camino as you reach your final destination at the Cathedral in Spain.
While one does not have to walk for miles-and-miles to experience the beauty of the Holy Mass far from home, pilgrimages do allow for a time of deep contemplative encounter with God, present in nature, present in the people we encounter, and present in the Sacred Spaces we visit.
This time of reflection gives you a chance to renew your encounter with Jesus Christ.
Today is First Friday. If you are looking for a powerful way to deepen this relationship as we enter into the Advent Season, we have provided below some options for First Friday Devotion for today, after your walk from Porto, Vila do Conde, or are en route to Balasar, or your last destination and which will be perpetual (every First Friday) in 2023, 2024 etc.
Go to Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament at the Basilica of the Sacred Heart of Jesus (BSJ) in Póvoa de Varzim which has adoration all day today until 5:30 p.m. Due North of the Mercado going to Aver o Mar. You can pray the Rosary here in silence.
NOTE: The Basilica offers confession at 3:30-5:00 p.m. to fulfill the conditions of First Friday / First Saturday Devotion this weekend… as explained to St. Margaret Mary Alacoque and Venerable Lucia.
If you are on the Camino today, come by for the Sacrament of Reconciliation. Note: be sure to arrive closer to the start time. HINT: Look for the line-up on the right side aisle upon entering the Church. Those who are not “peregrinos” (pilgrims) and are locals reading this journal are still invited to make First Friday / First Saturday a priority starting this month in preparation for Advent. The First Friday programme consists of participating in 9 (nine) First Fridays, and for tomorrow, Five First Saturdays.
If you cannot fulfill this requirement due to the stamp programme, or due to time constraints for work, etc., try the National Shrine of the Divine Mercy (https://thedivinemercy.org). Fr. Chris Alar, MIC, the Provincial Superior of the Marian Fathers at the Shrine and his team have led both devotions with the biggest Livestreams in the World (2000+ attendees) for First Friday and First Saturday since January 2021. Fr. Chris walks you through all the requirements of these two devotions and See the Calendar here and tune-in from anywhere on the Camino. If you miss the posted times on the calendar below, you can watch the replay. If you are in Stockbridge, MA, or in the USA, why not do a walking pilgrimage to the Shrine?
First Friday Devotion can include benediction, a Rosary offered to Jesus, a talk / mass, Holy Mass, an act of Spiritual Communion if you cannot go to the mass, and an act of reparation. As you pilgrimage, you can use Rosary beads to say 10 to 50 to 600 times the Jesus prayer, “Lord Jesus Christ, Son of the Living God, have mercy on me a poor sinner”). To learn more about the “Why” of our prayers, Fr. Chris has 150 talks online explaining the Faith. Tune in here:
Want to learn Portuguese and how to pray on First Friday? Start by learn the Angel of Peace prayer uttered during Benediction anywhere in Portugal with Pe. Nuno here:
NOTE: The above video also features the prayer written by St. Thomas Aquinas (see the video) in Portuguese. The original in Latin is here:
Tantum ergo Sacramentum
Veneremur cernui:
Et antiquum documentum
Novo cedat ritui:
Præstet fides supplementum
Sensuum defectui. Genitori, Genitoque
Laus et iubilatio,
Salus, honor, virtus quoque
Sit et benedictio:
Procedenti ab utroque
Compar sit laudatio.
Amen.in ENGLISH:
Down in adoration falling,
Lo! the sacred Host we hail;
Lo! o'er ancient forms departing,
newer rites of grace prevail;
faith for all defects supplying,
where the feeble senses fail.
To the everlasting Father,
and the Son who reigns on high,
with the Holy Ghost proceeding
forth from Each eternally,
be salvation, honor, blessing,
might and endless majesty. Amen.
If you cannot attend Benediction, just think as you walk “the Way” of St. James about the Real Presence being exposed today all over the world. If you are just even going to your car, or waiting somewhere in line, you can do this any day, even if it is not First Friday!
Why? Well, everyday at 3pm (from https://divinemercy.org)
Jesus asked, that as often as we “hear the clock strike the third hour” that we deeply contemplate His Passion, “if only for a brief moment”. But after we observe the moment of the death of the Messiah at 3 O’Clock with this special prayer, we then have before us “the hour of great mercy for the whole world”. (Diary 1320) Jesus has let us know that in Heaven, the 3 O’Clock hour is a special holy hour, as He said, "it was the hour of grace for the whole world — mercy triumphed over justice...In this hour, you can obtain everything for yourself and for others for the asking...In this hour, I will refuse nothing to the soul that makes a request of Me in virtue of My Passion". (Diary 1320, 1572) He asked St. Faustina, that if she had time she should make the Stations of the Cross during this special hour. He acknowledged that her duties might prevent her from being able to do this, but He asked that on these occasions, she step into a church and adore His Mercy, if only for a brief moment. He also said that if she did not have the opportunity to enter a church, she could pause, wherever she was, and “immerse yourself in prayer there where you happen to be, if only for a very brief instant”. (Diary 1572)

Do profundo abismo chamo por Vós, Senhor, *
Senhor, escutai a minha voz.
Estejam os vossos ouvidos atentos *
à voz da minha súplica.
Se tiverdes em conta as nossas faltas, *
Senhor, quem poderá salvar-se?
Mas em Vós está o perdão, *
para serdes temido com reverência.
Eu confio no Senhor, *
Guia - Dai-lhes Senhor o eterno descanso
