TERÇO ON THE CAMINO NEWSLETTER [1st EDITION]
Everyone loves a good ghost story, right? Well, Dra. Carneiro told us the other day about the story she likes to share about the family responsible for the Holy Week processions on the Camino and for funding the Confraternity of the Blessed Sacrament which holds a procession this Oct. 21 after a solemn mass as the exhibit at her museum comes to a close and the display switches to a focus on silverware and a collection of items that represent the history of nobility in Portugal.
THE STORY:
… so the legend is about Maria… a woman who she says is a ghost living here… on the Camino and attached to this tomb which sits at the entrance of the journey through the historical city connected to the Church of S. Pedro Rates:
One night, the priests and faithful of the Confraternity were keeping vigil at the Mother Church, Matriz, and fell asleep.
Unsure if he was awake or asleep, the story goes that the pastor at the time claimed to have seen a girl in a gown (we'll assume it is white) and who entered into the Church, knelt, and prayed before the tabernacle.
After she was done her devotions, the girl disappeared. The pastor asked the others present if they saw the girl. None seemed to have noticed. Apparently, no one ever saw the figure again, but in time, discovered this tomb in Matriz. Here is a photo of the old structure before it was rebuilt.
The tomb was excavated and donated to the local museum in Póvoa (the most famous city on the Camino because of S. Pedro) and it was found in a journal recorded by a priest in Porto (we’ll fact that that one day - apologies as we haven’t the citation at the moment), that the family was noble - we know this from the tomb stones (see the noble seal).
Many children must become silent upon hearing this little story of the devout ghost of Maria who many believe was the child of the wealthy noble family whose remains were found at the Mother Church, and who the museum archeologists believe were solely responsible for donating the funds for Holy Week in Póvoa de Varzim to ensure Enterro de Senhor (see video) and the Easter procession.
This weekend, Oct. 21, is another unique Eucharistic Procession (400 year anniversary) as the museum closes its almost one-year-long display. There will be a mass at 20H at Igreja Matriz and the a Procession at 21H00.
There is a special meeting of various Confraternities of the Blessed Sacrament from what is expected to be about 30 parishes in the Archdiocese of Braga, and this coming together is very special according to Dra. Carneiro.
All can gather in Matriz on Rua Igreja in the old town. Just turn right from the main doors of the train station from OPO / Porto.
Dr. Carneiro will give a talk about the Saints and healing S. Pedro Rates at this family Camino destination soon. Details to follow in a future post as Rosary on the Camino correspondents will attempt to cover this seminar. Send us a note if you make it.
